3 Ingredient gummy bears – easy homemade recipe
If you want a fun recipe to make with the kids over the summer holiday, this easy 3 ingredient gummy bears recipe is perfect.
The best bit about this easy recipe is you can tweak it to your flavour preference, so if you prefer strawberry jelly over orange, go for it! These homemade gummies are easy to do and the kids had fun making their own batch of gummies.
We have made these a few times to get the recipe just right as the first time we made them, there was not enough gelatine in there to get them out of the mould! After a little bit of calculations, we managed to get them just right and now they have the perfect texture of delicious homemade gummy bears. The main ingredient in our recipe is jelly, and then all you need to do is add in a couple of other simple ingredients ad away you go.
3 Ingredient gummy bears recipe
Ingredients
- 135g pack of jelly (if you are viewing from outside the UK, I used Hartley’s jelly)
- 6 Sheets of gelatine leaf (the one we used is beef gelatine, though you can get vegan gelatine if you want to make a vegan fruit snack)/
- 3/4 Pint of water (1/2 pint hot and 1/4 cold)
Instructions
- Place a pan on the hob and heat up the jelly and hot water.
- While warming up, place the gelatine leaf in a bowl of cold water.
- Once the jelly has resolved in hot water, squeeze the gelatine leaf to remove the water and add it to the pan.
- Mix until all the gelatine has dissolved.
- Add in the cold water and mix well.
- Using the little dropper, add a little of the mix into the silicon moulds until they are full.
- Place in the fridge until fully set.
- Pop out the mould and enjoy!
Top tip – Place the mould on a baking sheet or shallow pan before you pop it in the fridge, it just makes it easier to transport.

What equipment is needed to make the gummy bears?
Usually, we use what we have in our house to make our recipes but for these, we did need to purchase the gummy bear moulds. Outside of that, the rest of the items you should have:
- Small saucepan
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring jug
- Gummy Bear Moulds
- Little dropper/liquid dropper or medicine dropper (mine came with the moulds above)
Could you make these with real fruit juice?
I have not tried to make these with real fruit juice, however, I don’t see why you couldn’t. If you were to switch out the jelly mix and play about with the gelatine and fruit juice quantity, you may find the perfect balance to get them right. I will give them a try in the coming weeks,
If this works though, you could try things such as orange juice, apple juice or even cranberry juice. With real fruit blended down, you could even make healthy gummy bears! Vegan fruit snacks are becoming more popular in cold lunches, so packing these full of natural ingredients is the way to go. As these are homemade gummy bears, you can make them as healthy as you want.
How to store leftovers
If you have any gummy bears left over, they should be stored in an airtight container, sealed container or small pot with a lid in the fridge, for a couple of days. I do not recommend storing at room temperature or in the freezer.
Our kids demolished them before they made it into the container!
Can you make sour gummy bears?
For a small tweak on the original recipe, you can add 1/4 tsp of citric acid to the mix once it has come off the hob to give it a sour taste. This can make all the difference if you just wanted to have a different taste to them.
If you are looking for a fun snack over Halloween, why not get yourself a worm mould and make your own gummy worms, these are perfect for those recipes where you have the mud garden (chocolate soil) and worms! Once you have this recipe nailed down, you are able to make so many different versions of this gummy recipes
We are working on more new recipes in the gummy weeks and we can’t wait to share some fun recipes for you to be making with the kids. Our aim is to get families cooking whilst having as much fun as you can in the meantime. The best part though is you get the chance to make tasty treats along the way!
