Copycat super quick and easy McDonalds pancakes recipe
They always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and they must have been talking about these delicious pancakes when they said that! Here in the UK, we are not lucky enough to get McDonalds pancakes however if you have tasted them before, you are going to want to read on as these fluffy pancakes are the best way to start your day.
Now McDonalds pancakes (or McDonalds hotcakes as they are known around the world) are the real deal. Their sweet batter mix is the perfect match for either golden syrup or treacle for a weekend treat and if you do manage to have any leftovers, they are easy to reheat the next day. However, when I make these at home, they don’t last.
There are two different types of pancakes here, the thin ones that we have on Shrove Tuesday coated in lashings of lemon and white sugar or there are the fluffy versions like this. Both of them go down a storm in this house.
Now I am not sure of the ingredients in the chain version of these but this is the best McDonalds pancake recipe I have come up with and the closest copycat recipe of their own. Read on for the step-by-step instructions on how to make these.
How to make McDonalds pancakes
Ingredients
- 240g Plain flour
- 2tbs Baking powder
- 1tsp Salt
- 4tbs White sugar (I just used granulated but you could use caster sugar)
- 2 Eggs (beaten)
- 4tbs Vegetable oil
- 475ml Semi-skimmed milk
Instructions
- Pop all the wet ingredients and dry ingredients into a mixer or a large mixing bowl (I made these in my KitchenAid but you can do it by hand just as easily with a wire whisk)
- Mix until all the ingredients are combined and the mixture is airy. Try not to over-mix your pancake batter.
- Heat up a frying pan or non-stick skillet on medium heat.
- Ladle in your mixture and leave to cook slowly, after a couple of minutes your pancake will have holes on the top. This indicates that it is cooking.
- Gently flip the pancake and cook for a minute on the other side.
- Either place on a warm plate in the warm oven or they can be left on the side at room temperature and then reheated for 20 seconds per pancake.
- Top with your favourite toppings and enjoy!

Top topping suggestions for your McDonalds pancakes
So you have made the tastiest of pancakes and now you need to start thinking of the best toppings for them. Unlike the thin pancakes we make here, these don’t really lend themselves to lemon and sugar as much, however, there are some tasty alternatives and trust me, there are tons of ways to top them!
Glug of golden syrup – Ok this is the one that the kids went for, all-out sugar rush on their end.
Drizzle of maple syrup – We are talking about real maple syrup here, perfect for pancakes.
Freshly-cut fruit – For me, you can not go wrong with fresh fruit, they cut through the sweetness of these pancakes.
Sausage patties – Want to try something a little different, how about with sausage patties and a combination of bacon? Making this one very rich breakfast or brunch, it is the perfect breakfast combo.
Chocolate chips – How about adding a little chocolate inside your pancakes?
Peanut butter – If you are after something a little nutty, why not spread a little layer of peanut butter on your pancakes?
Tips for getting the delicious breakfast spot on
Now these pancakes have simple ingredients and in my opinion, is the best pancake recipe out there but making sure you cook these spot-on is going to ensure that you get to enjoy every bite!
The consistency of the batter is the first thing to get right, you want it to be airy and light but not over-whisked. Then comes the importance of cooking, make sure your pan does not get too hot as you are cooking, if it cooks too quickly it will almost caramelise on the outside. What you are looking for is a light gold but crispy outer shell.
As the surface of your pancake starts to pop into little bubbles, this is your sign that they are ready to flip. Once flip, allow it to cook for a couple of minutes on the second side.
How to store your pancakes
For those who have leftover pancakes, they can be stored in the fridge in either plastic wrap or a freezer bag for up to 3 days. Then to reheat all you need to do is pop each one in the microwave for 20-30 seconds.
