Fun Halloween Brownie Recipe
It is that time of the year when we can play with our food a little and come up with some creative designs when it comes to our baking recipes. This Halloween brownie recipe is the perfect example of this and the best bit is, that it takes minimal effort to create too.
Usually around this time of the year, you will find places such as supermarkets and shops such as B&M or Poundland will sell more creative baking items such as edible eyes, Halloween-themed sprinkles and more. So creating your Halloween brownies should be easy but also fun.
For our brownies, we decided to keep it simple with some mummy brownies, made using our delicious brownie recipe and then topped with drizzled melted white chocolate and edible eyes!
Halloween Brownie Recipe
Ingredients
- 200g (7oz) Dark chocolate, roughly chopped
- 150g (5oz) Unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing
- 2 tsp Vanilla extract
- 150g (5oz) Golden caster sugar
- 3 eggs, beaten
- 75g (3oz) Plain flour
- 2 tbsp Cocoa powder
- 1 tsp Salt
- 100g White chocolate chips
Toppings of your choice - could include
- White chocolate
- Edible eyes
- Halloween sprinkles
- Food colouring for your chocolate drizzle
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180 (fan 160)/350 f or gas mark 4. Grease a 19cm square shallow baking tin and line the base with parchment paper.
- Melt the chopped chocolate, butter and vanilla together in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of barely simmering water, making sure the surface of the water does not touch the bowl. Remove from the heat and stir in the sugar, then leave to cool for a few minutes.
- Beat in the eggs, then sift in the flour, cocoa and salt and fold it until the mixture is smooth and glossy. Stir in the chocolate chips.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the top. Bake in the oven for 25 -30 minutes, or until the top starts to crack but the centre remains gooey. The cooking time may vary a little depending on your oven. Turn off the oven and leave the brownies inside for a further 5 minutes before removing. Leave to cool completely in the tin.
- Turn out and cut into 8 rectangular pieces or 16 small squares.
- If you are turning your brownies into mummies, melt some white chocolate in the microwave and drizzle over each brownie to create the bandages.
- Pop a little white chocolate on the back of each eye to help stick them to your brownies.
How to store your Halloween Brownies
Once these are completely cooled and your decorations of choice have set, store them in an airtight container for up to 4 days. If you have decorated like we did with the white chocolate bandages, you may wish to separate the brownies with a bit of baking paper to stop them from sticking to each other.
What equipment do you need to make chocolate brownies?
These brownies do not require any special equipment to make them, it is almost a section of my staple items to bake and cook.
You will need:
- Ceramic mixing bowl (You will need this to be suitable to place over boiling water to melt the chocolate)
- Saucepan
- Wooden spoon
- Square pan or roasting dish (I used this roasting tin from Asda for mine)
- Large bowl
- Rubber spatula
- Wire rack

- Measuring spoons
What is the best chocolate to use in Brownies?
The best chocolate to use in brownies largely depends on the flavour and texture you’re aiming for, but here are some general guidelines:
- Dark Chocolate (70% cocoa or higher): This is the go-to choice for rich, fudgy brownies. Dark chocolate provides an intense, slightly bitter flavour that balances the sweetness of the sugar. It also melts smoothly, giving the brownies a denser, more decadent texture.
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate (around 60% cocoa): A great middle ground between milk and dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate offers a balanced sweetness with just enough cocoa depth. It’s ideal for classic brownies that aren’t overly sweet.
- Milk Chocolate (around 30-40% cocoa): If you prefer sweeter, softer brownies, milk chocolate is a good choice. However, it can make brownies too sweet for some people, so it’s often used in combination with darker chocolate or cocoa powder to balance the flavours.
- Unsweetened Baking Chocolate: This chocolate has no added sugar, making it perfect for controlling the overall sweetness in the recipe. It’s often combined with sugar and butter for a rich, deep chocolate flavour in brownies.
- Cocoa Powder: Some recipes use cocoa powder instead of or in addition to chocolate bars. This creates a different texture, often a bit lighter and chewier, but still deeply chocolatey. For the best results, use high-quality unsweetened cocoa powder.
For the richest and most flavorful brownies, high-quality dark or semi-sweet chocolate is typically the best choice
Designs for Halloween brownies to try out
If you want to try out some new ideas for your Halloween brownies, then there are so many options for you to pick from. Here are some of my favourite ideas to try out.
Orange brownies – You can use a mix of white chocolate coloured with orange food dye in your mix to give you something a little different. Give it a good swirl when mixing the two brownie mixes together to make sure you get an even mix.
Tombstones – I have seen some great ideas using white chocolate-covered biscuits as tombstones sticking out of the brownies, they look amazing and would be great for any party or gathering.
Sprinkles and eyes – If you wanted to go for something a little more random. How about adding lots of Halloween sprinkles and edible eyes, creating a visually spooky but fun brownie?
