Everyone loves a good cookie and this famous Quaker Oats cookie recipe is going to give you something a little different but still hit the sweet notes you need.

Back in the early 1900s, Quaker Oats started sharing their famous oatmeal cookies on the Quaker Oats box, over time it has disappeared but as with everything, nothing seems to be gone forever now the internet is here and the original recipe has been brought back to life. They did bring out a vanishing oatmeal cookie recipe but it is not quite the same as their classic cookie recipe.

This recipe bakes up perfectly, crunchy outside but still soft on the inside. I make mine with raisins however, you can either remove these completely or switch them out for another dried fruit or even chocolate chunks! Let’s get on to the recipe, which is full of simple ingredients.

Quaker Oats Oatmeal Cookie Recipe

Ingredients –

  • 250g Oats
  • 125g Self-raising flour
  • 75g Dark brown sugar
  • 100g Caster sugar or white sugar
  • 200g Raisins
  • 225g Butter
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 Tsp Baking powder
  • 1 Tsp Cinnamon

Instructions –

  • Preheat the oven to gas mark 4 and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy in a stand mixer on medium speed (or in a large bowl an electric mixer).
  • Add in the eggs and combine well.
  • Add in the flour, oats, baking powder and cinnamon. Mix until well combined.
  • Fold in your raisins.
  • Divide the mixture into 20 cookies, you may find the unbaked cookie dough softer than usual cookies. You will need to bake them in batches to give them space to cook.
  • Pop in the oven for 10-12 minutes, they will be golden brown but with a crispy edge when they come out but still soft. Leave to cool for 5 minutes on the tray before transferring to a wire rack or cooling rack.
  • Enjoy with a delicious cup of tea!

To me, homemade cookies can’t be beaten, especially when you bake ones that are golden, with crispy edges and chewy centres. If you don’t like the hint of cinnamon in these cookies, you could take that out and switch out for vanilla extract instead.

How do you store oatmeal cookies?

Once your cookies have come to room temperature, if you have any left after the family has been and raided them, then they keep perfectly in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days.

Now I personally prefer warm oatmeal cookies, however, I appreciate it is probably not approved to eat all 20 in one go! Keep the storage container in a cool place out of direct sunlight.

Alternative flavour combinations

As with all cookie recipes, you can adapt this recipe to suit your taste, here are just a few suggestions. If you are not the biggest fan of raisins then this is the section for you as we give you a few ideas to adapt the recipe.

Cranberry and white chocolate – We have a recipe like this on the blog, minus quick oats and it is delicious. There is just something about the fruit with the sweetness of the white chocolate.

Butterscotch chips – If you want to go for a different flavour combination, butterscotch chips can bring a new flavour dimension to these cookies.

Nuts – You could add some peanuts or pecans to this recipe, creating your own peanut butter cookies.

Candy-coated chocolate pieces – Why not add in your favourite candy-coated chocolate pieces? It can be a great way to use up the leftover chocolate from Easter or Christmas.

You can tweak this recipe to suit your sweet tooth, and as long as you stick with the basics in terms of the sugar, flour and oats, you will still come out with chewy oatmeal cookies.
