The tastiest slow cooker cola gammon recipe
Our pressure cooker gammon recipe is a popular one on the blog, however, there is another way that we cook our gammon which I think is even tastier! This slow cooker cola gammon recipe takes hardly any effort yet tastes amazing.
This easy recipe works great for a special occasion such as Christmas dinner, with roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and green beans. It can also be eaten as we have it with either jacket potatoes or with new potatoes. Either way, this is the best ham you are going to make and depending on how many you are feeding, it makes yummy leftover gammon for the next day.
The first time I made slow cooked gammon I was a little concerned that it might come out a little dry however it doesn’t and it is in my opening the best way of cooking ham. Plus it frees up oven space if you are planning to cook a roast.
It is key to make sure you do not skip the step on the boil before it goes in the slow cooker, this is there to take the saltiness of the ham away before you pop it in the slow cooker.
Slow cooker cola gammon recipe
Ingredients
- Unsmoked boneless gammon joint (I used a 3/4 kg gammon joint)
- 1 1/2 litres of diet cola
- Cold water
Instructions
- Pop the gammon joint in a pan of cold water and bring it to a boil for 10 minutes.
- Pour away the water and then repeat step one, this is to get rid of the saltiness of the gammon.
- Pop the gammon joint in the slow cooker pot.
- Pour over the diet cola.
- Turn the slow cooker on, if cooking on a low setting it needs to cook for 7-8 hours and for a high setting cook for 3-4 hours.
- Take out the slow cooker once cooked and use 2 forks to pull apart.

Slow cooking the gammon allows it to become soft and tender. You may think that cooking it in the Coke taste will be far too sweet and taste like a fizzy drink but it doesn’t, in fact, you wouldn’t even know it was cola. It just leaves a sweetness of the cola through the ham.
Can you use smoked gammon in the slow cooker?
Yes you can, it is all down to your flavour preference. I am just not a fan of smoked gammon, which is why we stick to unsmoked gammon.
Is slow cooker cola gammon syn-free on Slimming World?
It is, if you remove the visible fat from the joint (it is usually a thin layer of fat around the outside) then this recipe will be syn-free. Make sure you use a sharp knife to remove this and try not to cut into the gammon too much.
Other flavour combinations for your ham
If you are cooking your gammon but want a different glaze or coating on your gammon, you can play around with flavours.
Here are a few suggestions for what you can pop on your gammon:
- Honey mustard glaze – Honey and mustard go great with ham, chicken and sausages. Once your gammon is cooked, I would coat in a mix of 4 tbsp wholegrain mustard and 4 tbs honey, pop this on a foiled oven tray or roasting tin and cook for 10 minutes to give it a sticky glaze.
- Maple syrup – Popular with many but it is a little sweet for me.
- Honey glaze.
- Dijon mustard or mustard powder – These can coat the gammon and just be cooked in the oven for a few minutes to finish it off.
If you do not have a slow cooker, this could be cooked in the oven or on the hob, you will just need to adjust the cooking time accordingly, I just personally find the easiest ways to cook gammon is either in the slow cooker or in the pressure cooker.
Whether you are going to be cooking this slow cooker gammon recipe for a Sunday roast as the centrepiece for your big family dinners or just as a fresh ham joint for your lunches for the next few days, this recipe is the best way to cook it and give you tasty leftover ham!
